They just can't put the letter in a mail box. I just love how the USPS can not only dictate the size, style, and location of a mailbox and what can or cannot be put in it but then also claim to own the the thing, yet it is the homeowner who has to pay for it.

UPS and FedEX have their standards too. You should check them out sometime. USPS is by far the less restrictive of them all. Some of the things I see people taking to the Post Office would be rejected by the other two. Don't know what your talking about USPS owning my mail mailbox as I own it and I'm responsible for maintaining it unless your talking about a PO Box of which UPS and FedEx do not offer.

Every time we travel outside the country at least one person comments that it must make us realize how good we have it. I always respond that it really makes you appreciate what you don't have. In this country we have it all! Yet we are the most unhappy people in the world! People in other countries have very little but they are happy. Why is that?

I'd be willing to wager that the people here bitching the loudest would be bitching even louder if the postal service went away, closed offices, or stopped Saturday delivery. They wouldn't be able to send out Christmas card or have social hour at the post office on Saturday morning! Be careful what you wish for you might just get it!

I wish I didn't have to pay $15 BILLION a year for somebody to be able to send a Christmas card when there are cheaper methods available. As far as using the USPS as a social hour, why not go to a coffee shop and not have to bail them out every year. If so many people in other countries are all happy, why do so many people try sneak into the US every year?

You are quite correct....we have lived in Mexico for over 10yrs and have to explain to our business/investment related contacts (ie. many things can be authorized by an email, but still require a signed hard copy for files) and our family & friends ....that it is pointless to use the Mexican mail service. As a consequence, we have to use a "private" mail forwarding service that costs around $1000p/yr.....takes anywhere from 14-21 days to send or receive mail.....and will not accept packages of any sort. You can forget Christmas gifts, Amazon or any other form of mail order....and simple letters cost a couple of dollars.....thanks for nothing ...for profit sector.

As you say....be careful what you wish for!

I've most generally had good service from public entities, especially the post office. I can't say that private business has been any better or worse. As far as the post office is concerned, they have mandate in law that the private companies do not. I have been frustrated and pleased with both public and private entities.

I'm reminded of my youth back in the early '60s - getting paid to distribute flyers in neighborhoods. We were told, in no uncertain terms, of the penalties we would face if we placed ANY flyers into a home's mailbox. We could put them on the doorstep, stuff them into a door frame, put them under windshield wipers, pretty much anything, but if we were caught putting one in a mailbox we would lose any money we had made up to thatpoint, not be allowed to distribute any more, and our parents would facepossible fines as well. Back then I think it was something like a $10K fine to place non-USPS items into a home's mailbox.

Maybe we need to just use 1st class mail. Last month I mailed a credit card payment at about 4PM on Friday. At about 10AM on Sun. I got an Email from the credit card co that it had been posted to my account. Sounds like that is better than over night. By the way, it went from our small town PO in NW Wa. to Dallas Tx.
