Worst driving weather EVER!!!

Took off to Colorado just before Christmas from Surprise Az. No snow or bad weather until 40 miles from Sterling. Drove to Houston, no problem. Houston back to Az on 10. UGLY WOULDN'T EVEN START TO TELL STORY! Normal easy 3 day trip turned into five days from hell. been driving for over 50 years nothing like this. Two days of 100 miles each day. Sitting on highway 2 hours waiting for sand truck. More than 20 trucks upside down all over like toys in a living room. Coming down hills brakes on and sliding a foot or two at a time with traffic infront and behind for miles. Thrid day truck infront of me going up hill comes to complete stop-knew I was in trouble unless he kept moving. Jacknifed at top of hill in the ice. Hour later wrecker just happened by and pulled me straight. Fourth day going maybe 40mph and could see a wreck in left lane ahead. So icy I had to pump brakes, slide some, pump again etc. I am in right hand lane. Never even saw truck behind me going to fast and couldn't stop. He screamed by me on right hand shoulder just missing me and almost going off in the ditch!! I know he had to go change his shorts at next stop! Damn glad to be back home in sunny Az.

Wow! That would be scary for sure. I've only been in that situation once, but was in a 4WD vehicle. Still, you only go as fast as the traffic will allow. I suppose all the RV parks were full along the way.

I'm guessing the OP was dealing more with ice problems than snow. I hate the ice.

You guys in the north are used to it and have the infatructure to handle all the cold weather. You want to see something scary, try driving in Texas in an ice storm. It doesn't matter how good of a driver you are, it's the other 16 million Texans that will ruin your day.

Anyone can drive on ice. It's the stopping and turning that will get you!

Was driving from Lost Wages to Salt Lake City in 2006... Left LV, it was clear and dry,, About 2/3 the way there it got a tad white and scary, found parking for the night.. Walked from MH to assoicated diner for dinner, got about 20 paces/yards from Door and remembered somethign, Turned around, footprints already filled in for much of the path,, Had dinner, good nigh's sleep and back to diner for breakfast, News about how the ditches were lined with cars.. NOT KIDDING either.

Roads, (by that time) had been cleared and were quite nice.

I had no problems.. I slept through the bad part.

Myself I don't care how important it might be to be someplace by a certain time, with the icing conditions across the south west last week I'd have just stayed put and waited 2-3 days and then drove with no issues.

Got that right. One of the things us northerners learn is that most things can wait a day or two until the weather clears. ;-)

I used to live in that area. They usually have at least one of them a year there.

It doesn't matter where you are, people need to slow down before the crash rather then after it!

Very true.

My feeling is the only way they are going to reduce the speeders on Hwy 2 is to raise the speed limit. Lots seem to think it is the Hwy 2 Speedway!
