Since this thread started out concerning GPS: To the recently retired Combat Arms people here's a question.

Does the FO use GPS or map coordinates?? Serious question.

Can't help. I left the Navy in 85. At that time we used charts and loran C.

I have read that the military version of GPS is far more accurate than ours. WOuld seem to imply they do use it.

It used to be more than they are now, but Regan took off the intentional error quite a few years ago. Just last week, I asked a guy who was surveying with one of those long sticks about how accurate they were. He laughed and said they were supposed to be within about an inch or less, don't remember, not like the store bought type.

I had a fish finder Lowrance with a paper chart years ago. What a pain.

I might still have that thing someplace.

Dunner; Sorry. The Forward Observer (FO), generally speaking, adjusted ground based artillery fire while in visual range or from an aircraft. (US Army)

A high excitement job.

"A high excitement job"

Sounds like it would be fulfilling. Like... "Hey boss look, I called that one right."

Clinton removed the error...

The car gps's are only accurate to within 50-100 feet...

The military and expensive survey gps are accurate to with in an inch...

Loran is no more.. :(

Sailors should always look out for Uncle Sam's Misguided Children, if something happens to them we may have to do the real fighting and that would not be a pretty thing, specially after eating snakes and bugs for days on end waiting for them marines to arrive to the fight anyhooooooo.

I do NOT suffer from mental illness, but rather enjoy it daily !
