Your finest hour...
Have you done one remarkable thing in your life that seems to stand out, over and above everything else? Something you are really proud of. If so, what was it? I'll start...
Rewind to about the summer of 71 or 72. Cards are playing the Dodgers. I'm playing Center-field for the Cards. The score is tied 1-1. Although the Dodgers had a run, our pitcher "Ben" has a no-hitter going. The Dodgers have a giant on their team, Steve "Smith". Steve is 14 years old and 6'1" and about 200 lbs. Steve batted left-handed and when he came to the plate all the infielders and outfielders shifted to the first-base side. Our ballpark was low budget and had no home-run fence. The outfielders all went back to what seemed almost out of sight. It was always a question of "Just how far will Steve hit it this time?" Anyway, I'm standing about in line where normally there would be a right-fielder, but much deeper. Steve gets in the batter's box and proceeds to launch the ball into the stratosphere. It was in line with me, but I could see that I was playing nowhere near deep enough. I'm off with the crack of the bat, running as fast as I can toward the edge of the world. Much to everyone's amazement, I caught up with the ball and made the catch, backhanded running away. Ben finished off the next batter to finish off the inning.
When it was our turn to bat we got two men on base and then it was my turn at the plate. I hit a double and knocked in both runners to give us the lead 3-1. That ended up being the final score and Ben finished off the no-hitter. My catch seemed to be the talk of the league for a few days, overshadowing the no-hitter.
About 20 years ago I bumped into Ben and he thanked me for saving his butt. Sadly, Steve passed at 35 and never got the chance to reminisce about it. Heck, he probably forgot about it since he hit them that far every day...
Ok, go!
