1973 Dodge Sportsman Class C (Tire question 16.5s)

Okay, really nice old class c with 16.5 tires? That's a problem, right? I understand they no longer manufacture this size tire, soooooooo what is the fix for this, or is there one? Thanks in advance!

16.5 tires

easy fix.. get a set of 16 inch rims and tires from a newer one ton.pretty well all 1 tons up to 07 will fit. chev .,dodge and ford. I have done that a few times. or find some 16.5s and keep 2 spares with you. because tire shops probably wont have any.

And I have six Ford/Dodge 16 inch dual steel rims in my basement, bought for a project that has since been sold. Anybody near Roanoke VA can have them for free.

Mike,

Firestone is still making 8.75-16.5s as LRE Transforce HT. My brother had to buy them for his GMC because after the abrogation of the bankruptcy laws to create Government Motors from the old GM, his nest egg was shattered. At his age, there is no starting over. He was able to get them and has been working on getting 16" wheels to fit, but that is one weird bird. If he had even a little left, he was going to buy alloy wheels and be done with it. OH Well.

I went and bought a set of alloy wheels for our Cayo Motorvator and they look great. That is the way to go if you plan to keep the coach more than a couple of years.

Thanks Frank! Firestone is a pretty good brand of tire as well! I like the idea of keeping the original wheels and tire size if possible! I will have to give a look- see at those alloy wheels you mentioned!! The lady is asking $500.00 for this old rig and it runs, yet needs much TLC as it is 43 years old. I am just really drawn to these older rigs, just a cool part of motorhome history that common folks can still work on!!

Frank,

Where did you find your 16" alloy wheels for your rig? Thought I would check them out just in case I decide to go get this old Dodge Class C motorhome!

Thanks!

If memory serves that 73 will have front wheels different than rears. About 1976 they were interchangeble. Both were 16.5.

Just bought 6 Firestone's this summer for a 76 Dodge chassis. They are out there but you might have to wait a day or so for them to be shipped in depending on the tire store. Ebay also list them. Price was about the same as a 16 inch replacement.
