Smile 1985 Fleetwood Southwind Fuel Tank Capacity

Can someone tell me how to measure the capacity of the fuel tank on my mh. I can't seem to I find it the owner's manual anywhere. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I just got this and I don't want to be going down the road and run out of fuel. The fuel guage in it does not work.

Hi Paul,

You can get a close estimate like this. Most of our gas tanks are right behind the rear axle and they are mostly a rectangular box. It may have some rounded corners but that won't keep you from getting a good estimate.

Get under there and measure the length, width and height of the tank. Let's presume the tank measures 42" long, 24" wide and 12" high.

Multiply these three numbers together 42*24*12=12096 this number is the tank volume in cubic inches.

Now divide the 12096 by 1728 (the number of cubic inches in a cubic foot)

12096/1728=7 cubic feet

There are 7.48 gallons in a cubic foot. Multiply the cubic feet 7 in this case times 7.48

7*7.48=52.36 gallons

Check out 1985 Fleetwood Southwind on Google (see below).
Also, try Fleetwood's site for the 1985 brochure.

This is a late post, but maybe this will help. I purchased an 85 Southwind (30') this last December. It had 1/2 tank of gas, and I'm assuming my gauge is working. I filled it up and it took almost 50 gal of gas. So I am figuring a 100 gal tank. So if your gauge isn't working and you're at 4-500 miles traveling, I would look for a gas station real quick.

Here's an even later post...

I had to drop my 85 Fleetwood fuel tank and while I was under it I measured it... it is 54 inches long by 26 inches wide by 13.5 inches high.

54*26*13=18,252 cubic inches (ignoring the thickness of the walls of the tank)

18,954 divided by 231 (the number of cubic inches per gallon)=82.052...

I'm calling it an 80 gallon tank.

And I'm going to have to drop my tank AGAIN as the fuel sender is bad... AGAIN.
