Do you mean a mechanical timer? Does it have wires leading to something? It could be the remains of some previous owner's gadget, partially removed. Unless you can trace the wires, I don't think it's active.

It is part of the original workup as far as we can tell. Can't get to the wires without cutting into the oak cabinetry

I've seen similar timers used for bathroom heat lamps, fans, or hot tubs. When you turn it on, does anything happen? I'd check the wires to it, see if it's wired for 12v or 120v. That might give a clue.

I think it's the flux capacitor, you can't leave them on all the time.

Do what BFlinn181 wrote and turn it, to see what happens. If nothing happens, take it apart. Since there are no screws bolting the faceplate to the wood, pull the black knob and I'll bet you find a nut underneath. Undo the nut and you'll be able to take the faceplate off. Once the faceplate is off, you should be able to pull the switch and the wires through the panel and, at a minimum, put a voltmeter on them to see if they're hot. Then trace the wires, if you can, to see where they go.

I've been in a few Executives, and I've never seen one of those timers. I doubt it's stock, given the way it's installed on its side, but you never know.

Have your wife, or girlfriend, or both, lie on the bed, and turn the knob to 30 minutes. I remember this type of timer on the beds at the Coral Courts Motel. Usually there was I slot to put in a quarter. Eddie Elk.

South of the Border, the motel complex on the North Carolina/South Carolina border, had them too.

It wasn't sarcasm, but an attempt at humor. I'll let others judge it's comedy quotient.

Papatrucker, it's been 11 days since you posted the question, have you identified if it's 120v, 12v or connected to anything?
