1988 Astro Allegro

Hi - just acquired an 88 Astro Allegro and don't have any info on it - manuals or the like. Anyone know anything about these or have any resources? At this point owner's manual kind of things - how to operate the plumbing etc.

Thanks in advance.

A good place to look for manuals is on ebay. I have seen a lot of vintage stuff on there.

Blaster I'd try calling Tiffin service at 256-356-0261 and see what they can do for you.

Got it home Saturday. A pic is attached. The mural was NOT a deciding factor in the purchase.

Runs well and the interior is nice. Need to get it inspected and registered and all that. Next, trying to get the generator going.

Thumbs up

The Astro side of it you should sign onto this site.I have been apart of that site for 10 yrs and there is a boat load of help there.

THE PREMIER WEBSITE FOR ASTRO AND SAFARI VAN ENTHUSIASTS

Nice find.I have been passively been looking for a Astro based motor home for a longtime.

I have seen the Astro Safari site - came up when googling the Allegro. May have to join at some point.

If you are looking for one, there is a VERY nice one up on ebay right now (in California), another week on the listing so the price right now isn't too bad, I suspect it goes up. Mine is not that nice but I only paid $2500 so I can't complain.

Some progress on getting roadable and campable.

Turns out the alternator was bad - found out when it stalled and wouldn't restart. Who would have figured the dash voltmeter was actually working when it was showing 9 volts? I don't mind doing mechanic work but in an Astro you are working down a tunnel. It was a bear to get the old one off, new one went in pretty easy.

Also, turned out that the rear brake line had drooped down into the driveline and the u-joint chewed it up. Which explains the sudden appearance of the brake light on the dash! Replaced that, now I need to bleed the brake lines.

A few lighting issues I have to deal with - since it sat for about 4 years, lots of little contacts need to be cleaned up to get good ground. Once I get all the driving lights and signals going consistently, it will be ready for inspection.

More progress. Got all of the external lights working - the tail lights took a lot of fiddling. I thought it was wiring but turned out the socket bases were just corroded and I had to replace the contacts to keep the bulbs from jiggling and losing contact.

Replacing the brake line was a success, but the PO had told me that there was a pinholee leak in the brake line - now that the one that got chewed up by the driveline is replaced, there is fluid going to the back and now I see where the leak is - another brake line to replace.

If its not one thing, its another. I replaced that second hard line, successfully, then I bled the brakes and screwing the bleeder valve back down went too far - busted the wheel cylinder. That one it has to go to the shop for.

And while everything else is just about stock Astro, the rear brake cylinders are not.

Some more work - have the brake lines sorted so there is no leaking. The engine was running great and decided not to any more so that's a step back, I think it may be the fuel pump have to test it. Got the generator to run on carb cleaner so it runs!!! but I have to replace the fuel lines they are all dry rotted.
