1988 Chevy 454 Big Block Engine Air Filter(s)?
What am I looking at? I have spent hours Googling trying to figure this out. I just had a tune up done they did not replace the air filter. Probably because they could not "find" the right one? I did and ordered a replacement (A753C). The old filter in there was a F07M20-1 which I couldn't even find.
So I now have replacement air filter. But what is this "other" filter in there? The A753C is bigger in diameter and fits around that blue filter. ???

Have you looked up filters for your specific engine and cross referenced them? Did you ever find the old filter by number or make? I'd be real cautious about having two filters, perhaps too much resistance, your mileage would suffer and cause an over-rich mixture, especially on a carbureted engine.

It is very difficult to find accurate part numbers for this 1988 Chevy 454, engine (let alone cross references). The Service Manual only listed the A753C. That is why I was asking if anyone had seen a setup like this before. A better picture. Remember, the other filter fits OUTSIDE of this one.

The inside ring is a flame arrestor. It is suppose to stop back fires from setting things on fire. Is should be glued in and not replaceable.

Hi Everyone! I am new to RV's and needed some information. I have a "new to me" 1985 Allegro 35' with a 454 GM and an automatic three speed tranny. Top speed is around 60 without towing our Dodge minivan. Does this sound right to you guys, who know more about these RV's? I know this is not actually about the filter and flame suppressor issue, but I saw the heading of 454 allegro and well...it seemed like a good time to ask with all the posts from today.

You'd get better response from starting a new thread on this new topic. 60 mph does sound slow for the RV. Check that all brakes are released and not dragging, transmission shifts into highest gear. It won't go a great deal faster, but 60 mph shouldn't be the top end. Have filters, (air and gas) been changed? A tune up? All spark plugs firing?

When your rig was built, we were a decade into the unconstitutional 55 mph nationwide speed limit, which would be in place for another decade. In 1985, nobody had a good reason to race along at 60 mph.

At 60mph the engine should be turning around 3000 rpm the engine should be good to
~5000 rpm. Check the distributor weights to make sure they are loose and the springs are returning them freely. Also look to make sure the exhaust is free flowing.

Used to have same engine in my Bounder. That 3-speed GM tranny was a bear, not exactly made for cruising mileage..lol
But yeah, 60 was just around 3000 rpm, and loud as a cement mixer full of cinder blocks. Not sure I'd trust that bad boy up to 5K, though - if it lets go, that's a lot of shrapnel coming up between your legs.

I found this in my journeys:
..."RPO LE8: 240 net hp (trucks only)
Small oval (“peanut”) port cast-iron heads, Quadrajet 4-barrel carb, mild hydraulic lifter cam, two- or four-bolt main caps, cast-iron crankshaft. Available in trucks only through 1986 and some heavy trucks through 1989.
Only the 1-ton and larger 1977 and later Chevys got the TH400 three-speed automatic."...
