1988 Southwind/P30 chassis query

I have just purchased a 1988 Southwind (our first-ever RV of any kind) on the Chevy P30 Step Van chassis with a 454 engine. I am planning on purchasing a P30 tech manual from a local auto supply house. Are there any significant differences between the P30 in the Step Van configuration and the Southwind configuration?

I am especially interested about differences in suspension, brakes and drive-train, if any.

Thanks,

Jack, W6NF

Can't help ya with that Jack, but that's the first time I've ever seen someone call themselves "Elderly Fan Boy" outside of an Anime forum .

I have one of the manuals from Chevy. The only areas i see were a different transmission,( they offered a 4-speed stick), and or the Th400. The true Motor home chassis has the automatic only and is a th475. Its a heavier 3 speed. Also it could be that the 8R19.5 tires were the motorhome chassis. but i have seen 235/85R16 tires on some of them. I think the one's with the 16's were a step van chassis. The bigger 8R19.5 chassis is the more heavy duty. That's about all i could find out. I do know you can get parts that are cheaper when you want whatever for a model year step van. Depends where you go. Good luck with you new to you home on wheels, Dan

1988 Southwind/P30 chassis query

My Southwind does have the 8R19.5 12-ply tires and, as you say, the automatic transmission but I am unsure as to which flavor. I bought the Chilton's manual, which is fine for general maintenance but there are significant differences in under-the-hood layout for which I am hoping the Fleetwood owner's manual will be of some help. We'll see.

RedneckExpress: I've been into anime pretty heavily the past several years and found some really good stuff...better than most cable TV programming

Hi Dave, could I trouble you for a copy also? I am getting a '89 Shouthwind from my father which will need some work and I have very limited info so far. It is my understanding it is a 454, P30 chassis also.

Thanks,
Terry
