Get an 88 and up exhaust manifold, they have a built in bellows that helps to eliminate the cause of the cracking. Had these on my 88 , and no problems with cracked manifolds.

My 86 had the stainless bellows manifolds. There seems to be no logic as to why some had the cast manifolds and some the bellows manifolds.
