85 Southwind Coolant button mystery...

I have a spot on the dash marked "Coolant" It has a plug to cover the hole. Anyone seen this before? It is a factory button. The holes near it are from a big ugly button someone put there instead of fixing the washer button. I have no intention of using it but the mystery is driving me nuts...
Here is a pic..

Hi Chief: nice job on your rebuild. I parted with an '84 SW last year, same size/floor plan.
I believe that blank housed an indicator light for low coolant w/ diesel engine only.
My FC owners manual lists that lamp on Chevs instrument panel layout but does not show a definite location.
On mine I knocked out the blank and installed and illuminated toggle switch that turned on the aux electric fan I installed in front of the A/C condensor.

Thanks! First thing I have heard that made sense.. I didn't realize you could even get a diesel in one of these back then. Not sure I would want a 6.2 anyway though..

That would have been my guess as well, a low coolant light. Years ago, I drove a road tractor that had a light like that in it, if I remember correctly it had a very loud and annoying buzzer along with it.
