85 Southwind- P30/454 Chevy - transmission fluid?

I recently had some repairs and thorough vehicle check. Transmission is about 1/2 pint low and my mechanic said it took Mercon and he didn't have any. But checking the owners manual it said Dextron II. I'm assuming my mechanic was guessing (Mercon is a Ford product and no longer available) and I think Dextron II is correct. Also, I do not know (nor did my mechanic) the required power steering fluid, although it currently is at ok level. Manual gives me Chevrolet part No. for that, so I should be able to find out. Sometimes power steering and transmission fluid is the same, but I don't think so here. Anyone know after-market fluid for power steering for this vehicle, and is Dextron II definitely correct for the transmission?

Also, initially I could not find the brake master cylinder until I removed the interior dog house and found it inside the frame next to the engine. It was un-accessible any other way and it had never been serviced. The reservoirs were bone dry and the brakes on the brink of failure. I also think that on a vehicle of this vintage there may be grease fittings on the drive train which were probably overlooked during regular oil changes --fittings on the universal joints and probably steering. In the next few days I will crawl under there and look, but any advice or info here would be appreciated. Thanks

Dextron II is the proper transmission fluid but if it is not available you can use Dextron III. You have to use power steering fluid in your power steering unit. The power steering pump is also used for your power brake booster. To get at the master cylinder , you have to remove the front wheel and there should be a splash panel that also has to be removed. Once that's done you can get at the master cylinder.

First ......if trans is half a pint low it's fine Second ...... If your "mechanic " told you to put Mercon in a GM trans get a new mechanic!
