Allison Transmission Noise

Need to ask for thoughts or if anyone has had the same problem.
We have a 02 Holiday Rambler DP .

We had just left the campground , on our way back home this past weekend.
I had traveled about a mile or so. I approached my turn. Lifted my foot off the
Acclerator to engage the engine brake. I was going around 45 or so at the time.

When the engine brake activated there was a loud grinding noise. It sounded just like brakes
That are metal to metal. Traveled about another mile to pull over in a shopping center to look things over.
When the engine brake engaged again it made the same noise. I pushed the switch to deactivate the brake
And the noise went away.

Fearing a brake down on the way home I decided not to engage the engine brake again. The funny part is that other than the noise it made at those two times it acted normal. No noise, up shifted and down shifted normally. Once I was close to home I tryed the engine brake. No noise and worked normally . Tryed it many times at all speed ranges with no exceptions taken.

Has anyone had anything similar happen? Or have any thoughts. I should add that the transmission was not yet up to operating temperature
