Can anyone ID this RV?

Good evening all,

My fiancee and I are about to purchase the RV shown here. Unfortunately, we don't know the make or model and neither does the seller, so we can't get it insured! The registration says it's a 1986 Chevy P30, and the VIN says the same, but I think this is just the chassis, no?

Can anyone help ID this RV?

Yes!

Wow---Dave you really are the man! Looks just like ours.

When we look up the VIN, why does it come up with Chevy P30? Is this because the VIN only ID's the chassis? Or maybe we have a bum VIN? We know next to nothing about RVs....

Oh, also..we need to find out the length. Is RV length from end to end or axle to axle? Looks like the Georgie Boy Cruisemaster 281 was made in several lengths...

Thanks!

Length is bumper to bumper. The only clue I can give you about models is look at the info listed on NADA http://www.nadaguides.com/RVs/1986/Georgie-Boy . The first 2 digits after the "M-" number represent length. (ie. M-2810 is 28'). the remaining information 10, 50, etc., would be model variations.

VIN# for registration purposes was a matter of how the dealer originally registered it. Prior to 1981 some used the chassis mfg VIN, others used a unique Coach VIN. Uncle Sam standarized the VIN number in 1981. The chassis VIN does map back to a paticular unit though because each chassis had a unique number. Even today Winnebago has a Winebago Id Number (WIN) and a Vehicle ID Number (VIN). The WIN number defines the coach portion. The VIN is the chassis portion. Service - Frequently Asked Questions. Problem is DOT person may not understand all this. You may have to get your State Police support to work through the identification process.

Coachman does not list a Georgie Boy owners manual for 1986 but do have ones for 85 and 87. http://coachmenrv.com/OwnerManuals.aspx

Hi-

Have you actually found the VIN anywhere on that rig?
It sure does look like a Georgie Boy, and I'm pretty sure those papers can't have come with it when it left the factory...

The P30 was a big stepvan- here's a pic of what a 1986 actually looks like:

It could be the owner's mixed the papers up, but it could also be that somewhere in its history somebody sort of "substituted" papers from another vehicle.
I'd be VERY VERY careful to match up those numbers, especially if you're taking it out of its home State, or will need an inspection when you (attempt to?) transfer the title.

Good luck!

Francesca;
The P30/32 with the 454 motor was the standard Chevy chassis for motor homes in the 80's and 90's.

There was indeed, a stepvan P30 chassis as well- when parts are not interchangable, the MH stuff will be a referred to as a P30 Base, rather than a P30 Van.
