Cheap replacement for an Onan muffler
Well, we managed to crunch&munch the muffler for the Onan generator (long story).
A replacement Onan muffler from ppl costs over $200- not a popular option! I'm thinking that I can just find a small muffler at a reasonable price and stick 'er on there. Space is not an issue, I can pretty much fit whatever I want in there.
Is there a reason why this won't work?

I crunched the muffler on my Kohler a few weeks ago, pulling out of Autozone of all places. It is still functional but is a mess, so it will need replaced sometime soon. I'm going the same route as you and not paying through the nose for direct replacement. A muffler is a muffler. My only two concerns will be noise and too much back pressure/heat from an overly efficient muffler.
Not sure if the Onan uses a screw in pipe with locking nut for connections like mine, but I will be replacing that with U-bolts anyway. Locknut's are terrible for this type of application, they have nowhere to go but expand, contract, rust and come loose.
Anywhoo, I don't see anything holding you back from using any small car, motorcycle, tractor muffler, as long as it does not constrict the exhaust too much.

If "A muffler is a muffler" then why are you worried about the noise and too much back pressure? If that were try you could buy the cheapest used one at a wrecking yard!

Do you have anything constructive or helpful to add to this thread? Personal attacks are not appreciated. Take it to PM please.
A muffler IS just a muffler. A device that redirects exhaust flow through a series of baffles to dampen output noise and keep compression at optimum level so as not to lose horsepower.
Perhaps I was too vague. Any muffler of the right size will work. ie: having 1" pipe and small enough to fit the application. I wouldn't take the muffler on my Kohler and put it on the 454 on the RV, and vice versa.

Try Ebay -- there are usually a few available that won't cost an arm/leg

How about a motorcycle salvage yard for a muffler.

Thats still stoopid money for what is a 'basic' muffler....
Whats your part # for that?
Heres a $51 one: http://www.perr.com/cgi-bin/shopper....y=ONA6155-1258
For 75% less, I'd make it work..

Does your original muffler have a spark arrestor in it?

I questioned the cost of an Onan muffler and was told it was ~$38 from Onan.
