Choke Parts Needed

Hi,

I recently purchased a 1985 Winnebago chieftain with the carbureted 454.

For some unknown reason, the previous owner removed the entire choke assembly. The choke butterfly, butterfly rod, linkages, electric heating element, etc.

I would like to replace these items but want to retain the original carburetor. Just wondering if anybody has any leads on a comparable "junk" carburetor that I could pull these parts off of.

I will look it had what I think was called a pilot choke it had a bi-mural spring mounter on the pass side of carb on the intake I replaced this 2 times then I converted it to a electric choke but yes I may have the parts on a junk carb I'll look but I won't get home till late

Check craigs list and self serve auto yards

You may be able to find parts real cheap in the core pile

Many non self serve yards may be able to help, call looking for a wrecked one and you may be in luck

Those parts should be readily available. The original carburetor would have been a Rochester Quadrajet.

If you do an internet search for "quadrajet parts" I'm sure you will be overwhelmed with websites that have information and parts for you.

Hi Chris,

Are you sure it originally had an electric choke? Most Q-Jets used heat from the intake manifold to move a bi-metal spring thingy (as whem2fish said) to back off the choke as the engine warmed up. Often, people would remove the original choke and use a manual cable or electric conversion because the thermo-choke would not pull off like it should. The source of that issue is the exhaust crossover passage in the base of the intake manifold would plug up with carbon and prevent the manifold from getting hot enough to let the choke fully open. If the original choke was the thermo-spring-thing and you want to return it to that, pull the intake manifold and make sure the center passage is clear - otherwise go electric.

I used to have 2 boxes of Q-Jet parts but tossed everything a couple years ago. If no one else comes to the rescue I would agree that a wrecking yard would be a good source for replacement parts.

Did a bunch of research to determine exactly which Q-Jet was on the motor. Ended up finding a Q-Jet speciality rebuilder who is sending me all of the necassary parts from a "junk" core. Cheaper to ship just the parts than the entire carb body.........
