My husband and I recently purchased a 1989 Winnebago Superchief. The upholstery and carpeting has faded and is dirty but not worned. What is the best method for cleaning the upholstery and carpet. The cushions have zippered covers, but I would be afraid to wash them due to shrinkage. Also, where could I find slipcovers for the chairs, couch and dinete.

I washed the cushion covers in our 24 year old PUP and they didn't shrink. Just don't put them in a dryer--hang them to drip dry.

For the carpet and upholstery, look up this product http://www.professoramos.com/dricleane.htm. IMHO, this product is fabulous and will do a great job on all stains, even old stains. Yet it will not harm the fabric.

If you have a heavy duty machine, you can clean the seat covers in the washing machine. Make sure that you have a strong quality detergent, such as Tide or Tide with bleach. For cleaning the carpets you can often rent a thermax machine from a local ACE hardware or similar store. In my are it is $15-$20 a day, plus chemicals. The chemicals work pretty well. I use it often to get asphalt stains out, with some serious pretreatment.

A "steam cleaner" (water extraction) unit is probably the best option. The Hoover SteamVac Agility seems to have the highest ratings amongst the current generation:

http://www.epinions.com/Hoover_Steam...splay_~reviews

These units spray a hot carpet/upholstery cleaning solution into the carpet/upholstery; and then immediately vacuum up the solution along with the dirt.

We have always had one of these units around the house for over twenty years. They are indispensable for carpet and upholstery cleaning. As for the motorhome, going over all of the carpet and upholstery, is merely routine annual maintenance to keep the rig not only looking good, but smelling good as well.

We are still using an old Bissell canister-type unit that doesn't have any of the rotating scrub brushes commonly found on the current generation of Deep Cleaners.

While at one time Bissell represented the leading edge amongst water extraction units; they are now considered to be the least reliable unit on the market; and most likely to fall to pieces before you ever get a chance to finish cleaning your first carpet. Bissell has been plagued my one failure after another.

Where Bissell has totally bombed out on everything they make these days; Hoover seems to have picked up the slack in grand fashion, virtually taking over the deep cleaner marketplace as the only credible option.

>be afraid to wash them due to shrinkage.

I would tend to suspect that the zippers have been incorporated into the cushions for a very valid reason. While upholstery fabrics usually include tags specifying cleaning procedures, the only fabrics that might be vulnerable to shrinking, are wool and cotton. Although your upholstery is probably a synthetic fabric such as olefin, polyester or nylon; even fabrics like cotton won't shrink if washed in COLD water.

Like Stan, I have a vintage Bissell that still works fine. We did the Ken-Craft cushions and they look like new. But then they were not bad to begin with. The zippers are not there for removal of the covers but to facilitate the the upholstorer. If you take out the cushions you may say some unpleasant words trying to get them back in. If you don't have a steam cleaner, rent one. You'll be happy.

....Hold up Guys.....Rent an extractor....spray on the detergent with a spray bottle or a garden sprayer [half strengtht or 4 oz. per gallon]and let it soak for 1 minuite then take the extractor with HOT water and vacuum it up the first time and then use cold water to do it again....you will be so supprised at the differance and you aren't going to leave any detergent in the cloth to cause staining/skin rash/odor/material brake down/oil spreading......then if you are really smart use 3M Silicone protector when dry......wipe up spills with a damp cloth.......geofkaye
