CLR Flushing

Would like to flush my coolant system and thinking about using CLR, read some about the good cleaning it does. Any tips from those who have actually used it is welcomed.

What is in your water system that you think requires CLR? Vinegar will dissolve calcium (lime) deposits and doesn't have the skin and eye warnings CLR has. Here's the MSDS sheet on CLR: https://bigcatrescue.org/wp-content/..._Lime_Rust.pdf

You can take the shower head and faucet screens/aerators off and soak in a bowl of vinegar.

Flush the system well with lots of water, until all smell of the vinegar is gone. The normal treatment for the water tank and plumbing is diluted bleach. I prefer unscented bleach when I do it.

If I remember correctly, CLR does not play well with aluminum, which is your radiator core. What does the instructions for use state?

Oops, I miss-read your first post, I thought you were flushing the water system. I'd not use CLR in an engine for flushing the coolant system. Prestone and many other companies make specific flush solutions safe for all metals and rubber in the system, why use a kitchen and bathroom cleaner to flush the system. A radiator is normally not filled with well water, it should be distilled, so there shouldn't be a build up of lime in the system.

well I guess I will wait til someone that has used it answer. CLR will etch aluminum, it would take a strong mixture soaking to eat through. Prestone and the others have a lot to be desired as far as strength, not professional products.
