Converter hum

We have a 1992 bounder and love it. However when connected to shore power there is a Audiable hum. Not real loud, but noticeable. I am concerned that the converter may be going bad. Is this normal?

We have a 1996 Class C. Bought it used almost 4 years ago.

The converter has hummed all along and the fan is a little noisy.

I plan on waiting until it dies to replace unless I get bored and decide to try it on my own. I've had a couple estimates by our local mobile RV repair guys between 300 and 400 bucks.

I'm not too worried about it and I have no idea if it's normal.

Quite common.

Welcome to the forum:

Windings in transformers can expand and contract slightly since it is magnetic action going on back and forth. Fans too can become noisy.

Older converters used linear (as opposed to switching) power supplies with large transformers. the transformer cores have many lamination layers. The last step in the manufacturing process was to dip them in varnish to hold the laminations together.

Over time, the varnish looses effectiveness. When that happens, some of the laminations vibrate against each other. While it may be annoying, it does not affect the functioning of the converter.

Had to replace a noisy cooling fan on ours. It was 20 years old. Replaced it with a computer fan and some rivets.

1987 Holiday Rambler, it is audible and emits significant heat in warm weather. It is located beneath the closet and below two wooden drawers. When left plugged in to shore I leave the drawers open so it can ventilate are. Owned about 5 years and have seen no change.

Our converter in our ‘97 Aerbus seemed to hum constantly and I thought it was a little loud. I was a little concerned about it. . I decided to replace it with a new unit and it doesn’t seem to come on nearly as much and it’s silent.
