Converting to Inline Electric Fuel Pump

Good evening all. I am considering converting my
1985 Southwind ( 27' ) to an inline electric fuel pump
as the main source of fuel delivery to the carb. ( 454 )
I'll be removing the mechanical pump on the block
and covering the pump opening.

Before I proceed with this project I would appreciate
some input from others who may have did this conversion.
What would be a decent electric pump to install.
I have read some on the Holley Red fuel pump
and the Carter P4070 being used.
Anybody have experience using these particular brands
as a main fuel pump.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Al

Here's the one I used on my Diesel engine for 12 years. But the link gives you several options as far as features when you search for external pumps...this one is for diesel so you'll need to change search parameters. Just giving the link basically. Don't have any experience with the brands you mentioned. Sorry.

External Fuel Pump

I never considered it for a couple of reasons, All the electric pumps I know of are gravity feed. The manual pump has a return line to the tank that's supposed to prevent vapor lock. The pump in the tank is a 15 lb pump that is basically a lift pump and it feeds the engine pump 5 psi regulated by a regulator at the tank. It's a well engineered system as long as it all works.

I have used Carter electric fuel pump in my own application with great success.i have used this in many customers rvs with equal success.carter has built in regulator ,just bolt on and go.i would highly recommend putting pump in area where there is cool air flowing over it.

Not sure why you would do this, BUT..

You don't want to exceed about 6 psi. These are available for about $20. Also mount the pump in a cool and low location. This will reduce the chances of vapor lock.

This pump vibrates. We used these as an emergency / boost pump in our carburetor airplane engines. If you keep your mechanical pump and plumb this in line, the mechanical pump will pull through this pump.

Thanks you for the info. I'm mostly doing this for ease of changing
in time of pump failure, Getting at the mechanical on the block looks like a tight spot
I'll set the pump up in an area close and below to the tank with a pressure regulator
along the line

Thanks
Al

Thanks for the info, very helpful. I am leaning towards the Carter P 4070
for this application. From research I've done it should work fine for me

Once again thank you for your input and the information

The regulator was on top of the tank on a L bracket facing out. It also had a fuel filter along the frame to the rear of the steps.
