Drive selection
1995 Itasca Passage, which I believe has a TH4L80E transmission (or gearbox as we call it). Apologies for the stupid question but autos in the UK tend to have a drive gear only but this has 2. The selector display is labelled P RND(in bold and inside a square)D21. I've been putting it into the bold drive in the square but 1) is this right? and 2) what is the other D gear for? All my other cars are manual (stick to you guys). Wife has an auto Merc but I don't drive it often.

The "D" contained within another letter or square which is the closest to park, reverse and neutral is your overdrive or 4th highway gear. The "D" by itself is your regular 3rd gear which you would just normally put it into and the transmission would decide if low 1, low 2 or 3rd gear is best for your speed and load situation. I use this for speeds up to 55 MPH. Low 1 and 2 are just that, 1st gear and 2nd gear.
My overdrive is kinda quick to switch back to drive or go into kickdown. I think most people check their speed down and put it back into drive if this happens too often to reduce wear and tear on the transmission.
Depending on the gross vehicle weight rating of your Itasca, park may be a drum brake on the tail of the transmission instead of a parking pin or pawl.

That what you see? The 2nd D has a circle around it. That is the overdrive choice (4th gear)
Also the 4L80E has a common issue that cause it to go into limp mode when the wire harness leaks from inside into the external connector on the side of the trans. Be aware of it.
The fix? Drop the pan and replace the internal wire harness (easy job). While you do that you may as well change the fluid and replace both shift solenoids (A-B) and turn the force actuator up 1/2 turn (clockwise).
You can check the connector by disconnecting it from the side of the trans. It should be clean and from from any oil/trans fluid. Get some electrical contact cleaner and clean it well. If you see trans fluid (red) it's leaking.

OK, thanks. So do I start in D and switch to Overdrive when I get up to speed or do I need to be in 1 then 2 then OD? I have overdrive on my 1974 Land Rover but only engage it when I'm in top gear and at cruise speed. It then goes off when I reduce speed. All it does is reduce engine revs in high gear to reduce fuel consumption and engine wear.
If I drive the wife's Merc I just put it in D and away we go, although it does have flappy paddles if you wanted to go manual.

Running in the D (no circle) will limit you to only 3 gears. Using the OD D will offer overdrive when the trans wants it.
The overdrive gear will drop overall rpm's a few hundred or so (not a lot).
Be sure and check that connector for trans fluid.

How hilly is the terrain you will be travelling? What will be the top posted speed on your route for lorry traffic? Are you towing anything? Those would be the deciding factors if I was going to put it into overdrive or not. It is an automatic after all... Try it in OD then if you notice a lot of downshifting you can maybe check your speed down and shift the selector into regular D.
All you need to do is put it into D and go. If you hear the motor really roar and you are above 88 or so KPH, ease your foot off the accelerator and slip it into OD. Skip the 1, 2, D and just put it in D and go. You'll find out what works the best by paying attention to the motor revs. Enjoy the drive.

If planning on using Overdrive then put in overdrive starting out. Transmission start in 1st, then automatically shift up through all the gears as needed.

If your driving is on the flats mostly during trips start in the overdrive gear. Hilly areas start in D (non overdrive).
Without a tach gauge you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between overdrive and 3rd gear. It's subtle.

Shouldn't be going anywhere too hilly, just fairly local for now until we get used to it.
I can't really tell what revs its at as its pretty quiet. I've got TVR's and you can hear the revs a sthey're loud. Here mine:
