Engine ignition timing '93 454

Can someone tell me how to time the above engine. I know about using #5 or #8 and using the alternate marks but what do I disconnect to keep the computer out of the cicuit? I found a reference to 30 degrees Total advance at 3000 RPM which would perclude have to disconnect anything but I don't particularly want to be up under this thing with the engine reving at that speed. I find a reference to 6-8 degrees advance at 700RPM but this would imply to me that something has been disconnected. This is in a Winnebago 22ft Brave if it makes any difference. Thanks in advance.

There is a plug about 6 inches from the distributor, its a single plug. disconnect it, set timing, reconnect.
