Generator runs for 10 seconds...

Hi all.

I just purchased a tired ole' 1988 Fleetwood Southwind CLass A. (34 feet or so)

I love it. Cleaning it up, finding all kinds of cool stuff. I am coming from my first Motorhome, a 1988 Rockwood Class C, both on chevy frames. (Rockwood was a G30 with a 350, SW has a 454, but I do not know the frame.)

I'll start with a question on the generator. I got it to start, but it will run for about 10 seconds, then turn off. It will start again as soon as I ask it to, so I do not think it is starved for fuel, but I don't know where to start.

Any ideas?

Also, I am new to this forum, so if I am in the wrong place, or breaking some social convention, please let me know...

Try adding some oil to the "sump".
Could be oil level is marginal and when it starts the low oil level switch shuts it down.

X2 on the oil switch, had a friend that tried forever to get one going and thats what it was. It also still could be fuel the carb could be gummed up, I have seen alot with the pilot jet plugged starts w/choke but won't get gas to continue.

You need at least a quarter tank of fuel for the pickup for the generator.

You MH, like my 87 Southwind, sits on a Chevy P30 chassis and it should be 31 feet. Sorry, I do not know enough about the generator to tell you where to start.

If you need or want I have a digital version of the P30 chassis service manual. Just send me a private message (PM) and I will get it right off to you.

Thanks for all the ideas.

Dashboard does not work, so I do not know how much gas is in tank, that may be my issue, as well as a gummed up carb. (But it does start easily)

I tried holding the choke closed (overpowered the vac solenoid) and it did the same. I also checked the oil level, it was good.

My Southwind is a 34 footer, with twin beds in the back bedroom. (Soon to be changed to better accommodate my family)

Grandpere, thanks so much for your offer, I will PM you as soon as I figure out how...

KSagal, the others are right must have oil filled and more than 1/4 tank of fuel and if you do and still does not run more than 10 sec. I had the same problem plus my switch on the generator did not work so changed the board with the switch fixed the switch still did not run any longer. So I changed the electric fuel pump still did not work finally changed the voltage regulator and that did fix it. Bad part was about 200 bucks got it from flight-systems great service and was the best price at the time so you might want to check around. Mine is a 88 GMC 454 motor home Honey.

Hi,

I had a similar problem with my Generac in a '91 Class C. I used an alligator clip to put 12 volts directly to the pump to see if it was the issue. Mine ran fine that way so the electronic contoller was the problem.

I was playing with it (some call it "troubleshooting") while on shore power and the pump ran fine without the little jumper. Higher voltage to the electronics maybe? I guessed something in there wasn't making good contact. I cleaned every connection I could get at in that rat's nest of wires. It worked but still occasionally needs the little jumper to put 12 volts directly on the fuel pump.

It isn't a big problem and it's one heck of a lot cheaper than paying someone to fix it.

I used to have a portable with a bad low oil switch. Since the oil is full you could try bypassing that to see what happens.
