Getting windows out of tracks

In the 1977 Minnie Winnie we are restoring, one of the issues is the inserts in the tracks the windows slide in. They are badly rotted and need to be replaced. I found some replacement material, but it will be hard to install it with the sliding sections still in the tracks. Is there a way to remove the sliding glass? The sliding glass doesn't have wheels or anything. It just fits inside the inserts, so there is nothing fastened to the top or bottom of the tracks.

Thanks,

Bill

When I replaced the inserts in which the glass slides (on the windows of the '75 Minnie Winnie I owned '85-'98)... I had to remove the entire aluminum window frames from the wall of the RV and then completely disassembly the frames.

I replaced the inserts in the windows of our 2002 coachmen. Although it is not as old as yours it has a very common setup. Center the windows in the opening. Grasp at both ends and push upwards. There may be a spring on top of the window which you can compress allowing the bottom of the window to be pulled inward to remove it.

Thanks for the response. I tried that, but they don't seem to lift out.

Try sliding the insert out with the window still in place. Sliding window near closed, lift the insert on the opposite end and see if it will pull out from under the window.

If not, window removal from coach and complete disassembly required.

I have done that and it works. I needed a pliers to pull it out and then I had to put the window to one side, put the inserts in the free side, slide the window over the insert, slide both back to the other side and hold the insert in place while sliding the window over the rest of the insert. IF the insert wants to slide when opening the window I had to lift the ends and add just a bit of strong adhesive to keep them from sliding. Leave it sit for a day or so before using. It ain't easy but it is easier than taking out the window.

Thanks to everyone who replied here to help. I have the insert material on the way. When it arrives (and assuming it fits) I am going to try to do it without taking the window apart. It will be compounded a bit because two of the windows are 6' long, and both ends open by sliding toward the middle. Should be fun.
