I've got an 1984 Honey class A. on a chevy P-30 chasis with an 454. After I've been running awhile if I stop somewhere then go to restart it, the starter won't turn over at first, I keep holding the key in the start position and it will turn over "grudgingly" then fire right up. I've heard weak starter also maybe a heat shield. Also anyone ever hear of a after market starter that is gear reduced to eliminate this problem?

This is a common problem with older Chevy engines. The starter solenoid is on the starter and wears out due to its exposer to heat.

I would remove the starter and have it checked out. If it checks out ok then I would install a remote starter solenoid. I have done this on several Chevy engines and it has solved the problem you discribed. You can get the remote solenoid from Summit part #SUM-G1750

Jim, Id do the same thing as what Garbageman says. I've always had good luck working with Summit. 2-3 days delivery for me. If you use the stock starter I'd have the heat sheild on too. Sometimes those get left off.

You can also look at getting a mini starter from Summit. I used Garbageman's link and typed in starter at the top and came up with 566 hits. Just to show how large they are. A lot of car guys use the mini starters for the same reason as your having. I've been lucky with our old car and not had to get one. Jegs also is a good source.

I had a 1990 Holiday Rambler Alumilite that did this. The dealer installed some kind of after market heat sheild which took care of the problem.

How exactly does the heat shield attach? Does it just use the starter mounting bolts, or is there fabrication required

Jim, your GM heat shield should have been mounted by a couple of rivets on the exhaust manifold and/or a couple of bolts to the starter itself.

Gail " Banks" has a heat shield they will sell you. I think it just snaps in place. I had an '86 HR and no problems after the headers were installed. The heat will melt the plastic solenoid without it.
