There are a few routes mice might have used to gain access to "their exercise wheel". Either combustion air intake or exhaust on the outside; the return air path from the inside or one of the hot air ducts. You did not say (no reason so far) if your furnace has a single hot air vent or is ducted to two or more ducts inside. Could you tell from the damaged fan gage if the damage was on the combustion side or the heated air (inside) fan? That will likely narrow down which was the most likely path.

I had mice getting inside through hot air duct located in the enclosed waste tank belly of our 5th. Got access to those two duct hoses and clamped some mouse proof wire screen over the ends. Also used it in several other possible entry points. Here's one web reference: Many places sell similar products.

If evidence suggests it from the outside, you could fashion a screen section that would mount behind the outside cover. Sometimes you can buy a cover made for your specific model.

I've had over $4,000 damage to my truck and boat due to rodents. I take no pitty on them.

Congrats on your success.

Feels good to be comfortable, better that you did it yourself!
