I've seen people attach a tarp to the top edge, and held up with rope tied to trees, and also using tent poles (the wide ones that are used on large camping tents or basic awnings), and rope tied to trees or staked to the ground. They seem to work good.

Does it look great? Not like a regular awning, but if it works, great! I wouldn't expect rv parks to care for it, but state/federal campgrounds wouldn't be an issue.

Alternative to awning

I've seen campers use easy up shelters. They usually go on sale in the spring time. When you can afford it you can buy the awning replacement fabric and do it your self. You tube has a video on how to do this.

I did that on my old slide in pickup box camper. Worked good. It was redneck as all heck. But worked.
