Overheating in and of itself will generally be caused by...
1. T stat issue
2. Water pump issue
3. Clutch fan issue
4. Heavily de-tuned engine
5. Dirty radiator fins or excessively bent fins
6. Just plain pushing it too hard.
What I would do...(use Delco part if possible)
1. Replace all hoses and T stat (195F) Don't forget the by-pass hose.
2. Verify the pump/clutch are working (pressure test the system)
3. Be sure the system has no greater than 50/50% concentration of coolant/H2O mixture. Preferably 60% distilled water vs 40% coolant (Green)
4. Use only distilled water (no tap water)
5. Tune engine replacing....
Wires
Plugs
Cap
Rotor
ICM
Pick up coil (distributor needs removing)
Heat shielding for wires (critical)
TPS sensor
MAP sensor
Idle air control valve
Idle control air solenoid (if equipped)
Purge valve
