is it worth repairing the toilet

have a 1985 model rv while winterizing noticed the toilet valve had stuck/quit working I'm thinking just replace the whole thing come the spring and the dw thinks repair it
has anyone had luck repairing one of theses? it an aqua magic don't know the model
I'm pretty sure it is the original and replacement is less then two hundred dollars.
i'm thinking a malfunctioning unit would throw a wrench into a trip and i have until spring to save the cash, but she likes to save money when it comes to the rv and i'm more for upgrade and go on.
any help would be appreciated

If the only problem you have is the water value, which cost less the $30.00, I would fix it. I ended up fixing my toilet only because it is mounted on a raised platform and even the new short models ended up to high from the floor. Did not save much money because the whole underside had to be replaced. Cost almost as much as a new one, but had no choice. However, replacing parts is really quite easy, and us vintage owners tend to be pretty handy. I suggest you remove the unit and check it out for rust underneath the unit and other worn out parts before you buy the value.


In my case the dump value quit, the assembly was rusted. The rust was not because of water, but from the previous owners grandsons if you know what I mean, I make my grandsons sit down. Sounds like you have plenty of time to fix it.

Easy fix, just take pics before you disassemble things so you know what it should look like and where things go.... I've fixed a few when I worked at an RV dealer, and it's always worse working on someone elses toilet then it is your own.

Oh, and they never came in with an empty black tank either....

I replaced the water valve on my Aqua Magic V...pretty easy and the kit comes with a new floor seal. If you don't like your toilet, then that's another thing but this repair is easy. I can't tell from your post what exactly is wrong though. A bad water valve (at the top/back) of the toilet usually means leakage back there, is this the problem?

no leaks but when went to flush to put antifreeze down stool the handle would not move either one the fill and the flush.

On my Aqua Majic the cable from the foot pedal to the valve mechanism broke. Although they are similar to a bikes brake cable I could not find a replacement for my model and had to replace the complete toilet. So it would depend on what is actually broke and if you can get that part anymore.

You'll still have to remove the toilet from the floor I think- and you might as well replace the whole valve..

I'm probably the last person to figure this out but started winterizing the coach and poured antifreeze in toilet that's when i found it stuck / valve in-op.
a week later i finished the winterizing as it was supposed to get really cold
and the flush valve now works again i'm guessing that you should leave some kind of liquid in the bowl when not in use to keep it lubed?

I would say try to fix it. You dont have that much to loose and you will either be able to do it inexpensively or you may find you need a new toilet. Either way give it a shot.

Yes, you need to keep some liquid in the bowl to keep the seal lubed. If it goes dry, as mine has a few time, I use a bowl brush to gently dislodge it.

I have issues with one of mine just now.. I'm going to fix it... But later I'll replace it with one that... More to my liking for other reasons.. But that won't be till 2014 at the soonest.

I did a new valve on my 84 came with new seal and spring took about hour from start to finish. Worked great no more troubles. Got it from Ebay for like 25 bucks.
