I got two calls yesterday waning to know if everything was okay. We’re doing fine, fall doldrums maybe, but the big thing was fighting the internet service. My current service seems to have this thing with returning calls. So they don’t. We had no service Thursday thru Monday evening. And it still throttles down prime time with lots of buffering, halts, etc. I have two of their competitors doing a survey to see if they can provide us signal. If they can we’re switching. I pay for service and that includes conversations.

Glenda and Dozer really enjoyed the Gator. The neighbors have four ankle grabbers that are easy to love. She let them out four times a day for business and sniffing duty. Two Yorkies, one Westy, and one Shitzu. Four different versions of affection and curiosity that was well behaved.

We’ve had some loud weather but only sprinkles with one exception that gave us less than an inch and a half. Yesterday was almost 90 with a low in the mid seventies. This morning it’s mid forties with a high in the high sixties. This morning I’m off to the VA for my six month check up and flu shot etc.

Welding has been a bear because the fit ups aren’t perfect with the metal being thin wall. Some of the gaps have been consistently inconsistent. There’s always a gap somewhere in the fit up and it takes up all the time work to seal up.

All along I’ve had the idea of using brackets and lots of TEK screws for tying things together where possible. But the hiccup was finding the right set up for making the brackets with a hard right angle break. One of the purlins provides the right shape but there isn’t always the ninety degree angle I need. They’re roll formed and most of the bends are lazy and less than ninety degrees.

A bud came by yesterday and we did some brainstorming. He has a well equipped welding shop and was pretty well stuck on the idea of setting up a fixture for my hydraulic press for making the bend I wanted. I wanted a simple manual device that I could use to fine tune the existing bend. After he left I grabbed four pieces of scrap and made it. It’s just the way it happens.

This is a typical bracket. It’s attached to the column with nine TEK screws. But as you can see the angle of the horizontal leg is less than ideal.

Looks like it is coming along Harvey. Maybe all this needs is a little simplification. Get out the BFH and go to town.

The new tool was made out of scrap. Some stainless 5/8” rod, two pieces, 3/4” pipe, and some rusty bar stock. It works like a fire hose in a water gun fight.

The bracket not only provides a secure attachment, it flattens out the bow in the material that creates the gaps that make the welding tough. The cross piece/brace will be attached to the bracket with six or more TEK screws. Then I will follow that with the some stitch welds.

Another concern was my supply of material is limited and I’m having to make sure the cuts take advantage of what i have because there isn’t any more available at a reasonable price. Day before yesterday I found another source at a reasonable price so i can move forward without worrying about screwing up a cut.

We’ve been fighting the internet service. Our provider won’t answer the phone, they don’t have a physical address, and the service has been spotty. This week I had two of their competitors come by, consensus is a tower, fifty feet high. Tower company prices run from $1,000.00 to $1,500.00. I’ll own the tower and will be able to use any provider I want. A friend has a used tower I can have for free. I also have access to a box with two new towers, $600.00 for the pair. I could have a new one for $300.00 or less. I’ll probably go with free option. It has some issues but I’m an issue person.

The alternative is ViaSat satellite service. There are limits on speed and usage. Plus the price would be $150.00 per month, just for internet bandwidth. I can pay for a tower ($300.00 to free) and local better service ($40.00 per month) in no time at all.

The building is coming along, most days it doesn’t look like much is happening but we keep plugging along. The TEK screw with brackets really solidifies the structure. The most irritating thing is both the screws and the steel purlin material have a tendency to work harden. So the screw either goes in quick and easy or Sometimes it’s easy, just a new screw. Other times it’s a couple of screws and then finally abandonment of that hole and a new screw. Of course the screws are supplemented by welds. But I don’t have to do hundred percent of the joint welds like I did without the brackets.

I’m having a situation some here might be able to help me with. Pain is individual. I’ve accepted that pain some might see as incidental can be debilitating for others. The VA doc added some 325 mg Tylenol’s to be taken two at a time three times a day for pain. I’ve never taken pain pills for work, always after work. I’m used to working with a level of pain and I’m worried about taking pain pills, not for addiction but for later problems that I’ve heard can happen. I would hate to be in my eighties and having a real problem because I took pain pills in my seventies.

I’ve got some help lined up for the roof panels installation. They’re just waiting for me to get the framework done.

Harvey, I have been following you and I hurt just reading about your work. I too have stiff joints that makes getting up a little painful and unsteady. My doctor prescribed an anti-inflammatory drug called Celebrex. It feels like all of my joints have been recently lubricated. I have taken it for many years without worry. You might find it is just what the doctor ordered too. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing!
