My 'new' 1985 Gulf Stream 34' Sun Stream has tires manufactured in mid-2002, so they need to be replaced.
Anyone running 225/70's instead of 8R19.5's? Just curious about the dual spacing issues; I have no real issue with the diameter difference.

Any decent tire dealer can answer the questions about tire size, capacity, and spacing. Make sure the tires will fit for full turns in the front, too. I guess 12 year old tires need replacing!!

You will have no problems with 225/70r19.5 tires replacing the 8r19.5s. That is the recommended replacement. If you go to 245/70R19.5s like I did, you will need a thin spacer for the duals. A close check is needed on the front for sharp turns. Ours just fit, I mean like 1/8 inch of clearance.

I replaced mine a year ago with 245/70R 19.5 tires and have had no issues.

We have the 225x70x19.5 on our 82 and we need to replace and will use the same size. Why change when they work perfectly now?

Because of all the positive things I've read about the 225's, just not sure about replacing the 8r19.5's with them due to dual spacing issues. Some rim sets don't have enough spacing. If the duals rub, or allow dirt/debris buildup between them, the abrasion will cause them to fail quickly.

Seems most are saying it's ok. Did the same thing on ours without any problems.

I thought of an 'issue'. My speedometer is less accurate than it was before the tire change. Now about 7mph at 65 mph (GPS). I don't consider that much of an issue (re: problem) but can imagine some folks would not like it. I may get around to re-calibrating at some point.

As of now I'm planning to convert to the 225's. It's been too cold and snowy here to crawl underneath after work and measure the dual spacing.

May I ask about the 429 in your name?
MY 64 deville convert has a 429 in her and can leave 15 foot of rubber on the street.

Is that what you have in the MH?

I bought a 1978 Glastron/Carlson CV23 that originally had a 460/Berkeley jet drive. The PO pulled the 460 and installed a 1970 429. Very bad move since an auto engine doesn't have a baffled oil pan, or clearances set up for use in a jetboat ... and sadly, he didn't take very good care of it (the boat was in excellent, original condition though). She stuck an exhaust valve on Labor Day, 2013: broke the pushrod, then bent the intake pushrod; then proceeded to spit up both lifters and lost oil pressure to the top end. I dropped about $6500 on a major engine & pump rebuild this year. She now has a healthy ~500hp/550tq 466; only utilizing the original block. I sourced D3 heads that had been ported/polished, had screw-in studs, and 2.25"/1.77" valves (they're HUGE). I wanted ultimate reliability, so I opted for an Armando's 10qt oil pan, which meant ditching the original 3-pt mounts (which wouldn't have fared well with the extra hp/tq). I decided on a rail kit, and waited almost 3mo for a company in Cali to prototype a kit utilizing a top-mount starter. I finally got her in the water in early Oct

, but she'll be ready for next year. The Edelbrock 750 will be replaced with a Holley 950 this Spring. The MoHo will play a big part in the CV's future.

I kept the original D0VE-C heads just in case I want to bump the compression from 10:1 to ~11.25:1 in the future.

WOW Nice Tron,
I had a 76 Glastron V176 with a Volvo 120 HP a far cry from your 429!!!! I will say my 429 sounds just like yours I ran straight stainless pipes from the rear end to 2 inches past the rear bumper.(about 4 feet gives it a nice crackle ) I also changed the carb to a Edelbrock, IC your changing to a Holly??
Is yours above water exhaust?
Plan on having it as your toad?

I found a nearly new pair of 225/70R19.5 Hankook AH11's for the front; 1313 date code, approx 1500mi on them.
I just found a set of rear tires; Michelin 225/70R19.5 XDS (or XDS2, not sure). Date code 0113, approx 75% tread depth left.
The Hankooks are 12ply, which I'm fine with for the fronts. The Michelins are also 12ply. I was really looking at 14ply for the rears. Any issue using the 12ply tires for the rear? They lose about 300lbs load capacity compared to the 14plys.
