Need Advice on Sealing Doghouse

My Wife and I are just finishing up with the installation of a remanufactured 454 in our 33' Pace Arrow, Titanic, and we're wondering what to use to seal the edge of the doghouse against the floorboards? The original material was some kind of gooey, non-hardening mastic that seemed to seal well, but perhaps there have been new materials developed for that purpose. We want to retain the non-hardening feature so we can remove the doghouse at some future date if necessary.

Any ideas?

I use the rubber window sticky tape (one side) which is either 3/4 or 1" wide and 1/4 inch thick and it's lasted for years.

Whose headers are you using and what's the rest of the exhaust system going to look like?

Very nice engine - I want one!

I'd also like to know the brand on your headers, they look and awful lot like the set we put on the 350 my brother and I rebuilt and those damned things weren't welded terribly well, wound up developing leaks within 2000 miles of use.

The headers are Thorley Tri-Y's and they dump into a straight-through two-into-one DynoMax Mega-Flow RV muffler. The welding is nice.

The motor is from S&J Engines in Spokane, WA, and is motor home specific with an Elgin E-727-S low rpm, high torque cam, heavy duty double row Cloyes timing set, stainless valves, with hardened seats, and coated skirt hypereutectic pistons. It's bored .040" over, making it a 463.

There's something about a big block that just makes me smile....

Yeah, you've got a better brand than the one's my brother used. They were whatever generic thing that Summit Racing carried.

Talking

The header flanges are nice and heavy, thick material and the bends are well-formed also. I ran them for a short time on the previous engine and it seemed to have plenty of punch plus a little growl to it....

So anyway, to get back on topic, anybody else have any recommendations for sealing the doghouse? We'll be doing it pretty soon. Another friend of mine off list mentioned butyl rubber, either in tubes or rolls. Ever heard of that, or used the stuff?

I wouldn't touch butyl rubber for sealing your dog house, you're better off getting stick on foam gasket and then stapling it to the underside of the doghouse here and there (providing your dog house is made of wood).

Doghouse is fiberglass. Have you ever used butyl? What is your objection to it?

Butyl Rubber is a maliable caulk-like material used in most rv seams. Its great, so long as you don't plan to open the doghouse again. If you do, you have to scrape and clean ALL of it off and reapply fresh, its not meant as a reusable sealant.

It also oozes with temperature changes, flexing, the list goes on. I have used, most RV manufacturers use it, hence why RVs start to leak within a year or two.
