Yes, you can remove the smog pumps and the engine will run fine. I did it to mine. I didn't notice any increase in mileage, but certainly didn't notice any decrease either. But I haven't replaced the plugs, or done any type of tune-up either. Hopefully a tune-up will help.

while under the RV replacing brake lines, changing oil and filter and greasing the front I was looking at all the useless smog stuff., I see covers around the exhaust manifold with metal tubes all over the place and all sorts of other stuff not used since I did not put a belt on the two air pumps. there is hoses and tubes and what not running all over and around the motor, can I just remove all that stuiff without affecting anything?

When you remove the air pumps and the lines attached you will have to plug the holes in the exhaust manifolds. I used brass pipe plugs in the olden days. Hope this helps.

You mean all those pipes are actually screwed into the exhaust manifolds, what a screwed up systemit was back then.
