New roof

Haven't done much on the rv but this last couple of weeks have turned up some serious issues. The rv Air Conditioning quit. Had to get a new one. Done but while i was on the roof. At the back of the 5th wheel there is a hard surface I thought it was because it was for the ladder and luggage rack on it. The rest felt like it was a metal roof with coating on it. It crunched just like that. When putting the new a/c one the roof. It tore teh roof a bit so i got to looking at it and it was originally chip board with a rubber roof on top. The chip board is breaking down. Thats why it let the roof open up. I sealed it back up for now with a rubber roof patch and some rubber sealant. Thats temp for now. Looks like i will be replacing the entire roof. The roof coating they put on teh rubber roof will most likely damage the rubber membrane. Can i get by with using the original roof and just replace the wood under it or replace the whole works? I show no leaks anywhere and i can't figure that out. With the roof in such bad shape you would have thought it would have leaked somewhere. That is why i never thought about it at all before. This is a 94 Fleetwood 5th wheel trailer. So 20 years i guess it may be time to replace the whole thing. Any ideas other than stay off the roof for the summer. Its in the 100's here right now. Summer is not a good time to start up this kind of project. I couldn't see any other breaks in the roof so hope it will last till the cooler weather. Anything else you can think of that i may need to do. It has a foam insulated roof with ducted a/c on it. Is this something i can do myself? Any ideas as to how this should be done by myself.
Dan

I understand not wanting to clamber around on the roof- do you have a ladder that is tall enough to let you see/work on the roof?

Not sure what kind of surface you have on there now, but to help protect against leaks until fall, I would probably invest in a couple gallons of Kool Seal or Sno Roof elastomeric roof coating. It rolls on like thick paint, so with a long handled roller and a good ladder or scaffold you could protect against pinholes and tight cracks in the present roof.

Otherwise I'd just put a quality tarp over it.
