New to this- looking for tips... 1990 Mallard
Hello everyone,
I'm Joe and I recently acquired a 1990 Mallard Sprinter for the too good to pass up price of FREE! My Father in law owns a used car lot in Spring Hill, FL and I was there this past weekend for a brief visit. While there he tossed me a set of keys and said "go take a look at that rv over there".
It has 66k miles and starts right up. Everything appears to function (at first glance any way). There had been a leak in the front end of the roof which they had already repaired externally, but the ceiling inside over the bunk is gutted. Other than needing serious TLC, cleaning, and in my opinion some updates, it is in decent shape. Oh, the ladder is pretty much shot.
After looking it over, he tells me I can drive it home if I want it. Only condition is that I will let him and my mother in law use it when they visit. Deal! (I didn't end up driving it home, but I am flying down to bring it back after the holidays).
I have plenty of experience with home remodeling and repairs and can find my way through most basic automotive troubleshooting as well, so I'm not intimidated by the process ahead.
I would like some ideas and any advice from experience that you might have to offer. I'm sure there is a wealth of knowledge here. What should I watch out for? Where should I start? What have you done? Show me some pictures (I'm a photographer, so I always want to see pictures)?

The first thing you want to check is the tires. If they are over 7 years old they probably need to be replaced. They may look good and have plenty of tread but don't trust them.

Replace all the rubber fuel lines, power steering and transmission as they are kinda flammable when sprayed an a super hot exhaust manifolds (alot of classics gone due to this) might be a good idea to do the radiator and heater hoses, but at least if they break the spray water. Have at least one good sized working fire extinguisher also.
And as said above tires

Jlynnphoto,
Congratulations on the rig, nice deal. There is a thread under "Vintage RV" called "Total Rebuild". It's pretty long but I will tell you that the info inside that thread is exactly what you will want to see. Terry has rebuilt from the bottom up (literally) his 5er and then built the tow vehicle. He has done videos almost all the way through and it will give you a great base to work from.
I just started a thread called "RV Fixes for Newbies and Oldies" that might give you some insight also. This thread will be added to now and again.
You'll love glamping when you get everything fixed. Take your time and what they said about the tires is unbelievably important so please check them and replace if older than 7 years.
Best of luck, Lynne

In the December 2017 Motorhome magazine a man wrote that a friend sold him a motorhome for $1 to get rid of it. After getting it road ready and livable he now has $30,000.00 invested in his $1 motorhome.
