No clue where to find speedo cable....

If that is even why my speedometer and mileage counter is inoperative?
Also, what do I look at for knowing how much fuel I have. It is the only gauge that doesn't work.
The Rpm gauge works as for being able to tell how fast I am going but I wouldn't be tracking miles driven/put on the unit.

Spedometers do not use cables any more. All gages are now electronic. What gage cluster? If this is a GM product from about 2000 on, then do a web search. There are hundreds of posts on GM gage failures. You will need a rebuilt gage cluster.

You need to find out which transmission you have......you can do that by either taking a pic of the bottom oil pan, or mak'n a sketch, then going to a parts store, as most have a pic chart id'n transmissions from the shape of it's oil pan.....and do you know which engine you have?....another help is what does the shift indicator say......P,R,N,D,2,!.....?....Just spent 20 minutes typing out how to check stuff and AT and T let me down again...thank god for Verizon

Gauges with engine running......
The mess of wires is under the steps, there is a plug in but I wonder if I should splice and tape the destroyed wires with just electrical tape just to see if anything comes to life and if so, do I need to turn off or unplug anything before doing so?

try rock auto you might be able to find the cable there. First check the cable can you see it broken? Disconnect it from the speedo gauge and see if it has movement. If not it might be the drive gear in the transmission gone. Hope this helps. also on the other gauges check your ground's

you can buy cables at any auto parts store you need to measure the old one e in different lengths if it is broke you will need to pull it from both ends speedo head & transmission

My 1978 MCI has electronic speedo driven from a pulse generator on the back of the gearbox, and a tacho driven from the alternator

and never did have a fuel gauge other than a calibrated dipstick
