One trick for staining and smooth finish is to wet sand with very fine grit paper like 400 to 600 and the stain is the wet part.

Stain soaks into fibers and some naturally lift then sandpaper cuts those off and also rubs stain in.

Wipe clean and when dry any raised fibers settle back and surface is glass smooth and has great tone.

Stain ability dependent on stain too.

Minwax or however ir is spelled has viscosity if paint thinner and works well with almost everything but a glue joint.
