Onan generator replacement

Greetings all, I just some bad news about the generator in our 87 Southwind. The generator portion of the generator is fried and it will cost over $5000 to fix if they can find all the parts. I am wondering if anyone out there has a line on a used 6.5KW or even as low as a 5KW generator that will fit in my MH. I know this is a long shot, but we don't have $5-6000 laying around for a new one or to fix this one even if all the parts were available.

Have you gotten a second opinion? For a $5000 repair I would!

I see lots of Onan gensets on craigslist in my area for $200-$700, 4KW to 5.5KW and higher.

Get the actual model number and start looking on cl.

Work your way out distance wise just for a generator then confirm model numbers.

Onan generator replacement

The $5000 repair sounds high when considering these are new prices...

From $3700 for a 5.5kW to $4800 for a 7kW

I have found several on craigs list and on eBay but once you have parted with the money you are stuck if the generator does not live up to the seller's statements. I have found a 5.5KW for $2800 from a reputable RV salvage yard so I guess I will go with that instead of trying to find a good 6.5KW like I currently have.

Thank you all for your help and advice.

O-NO mine is on the blink now .I am hoping just a carburetor rebuilt. I am like you no extra funds, but we really need to have one. Need to get her fixed if I go south this winter.
Good luck and please let us know how it ends up,
Thanks,Tim

I think at this point you have to ask your self if just buying a yamaha or generac. For $1000 you can get a lot of generator. If you were willing to take on a removal, and replace yourself, modifying one of those is not that far fetched.
If you don't have the expertise, and are just relying on a shop to do this for you, then you are in the same shape as most of us RVers. Nothing wrong with that, but it also means you have to pay what the "man" wants. If you are not handy, buying a used Genny is very risky and can end up biting you where you sit.

Having been trained on generators in the military and also working on them throughout my career I would not spend that amount of money on an old generator.
I have an 88' Itasca with a 89' generator and if it goes bad it will get one of the cheap air cooled battery start as a replacement.
As said these are less than $1000, sometimes way less. On my rig the generator hangs down behind the right rear tires so not hard to hang a different unit there.

If your other buy doesn't work out check out Arizona RV Salvage. Drive out here to buy one and I can be talked into helping you change it out.
