Yea, not Cummins... most likely Caterpillar V8. They didn't start using the cummins 8.3C until the early 90s.

Here's a neat article on Foretravel's history showing some of the different models/powerplants they had:

Most likely a CAT 3208. They came with and without turbos...

I wish it was a CAT

It is a Cummins VT225 also known as 555 or Triple Nickle.

Not one of Cummin's best efforts. The early ones were governed at 3300 RPM and liked to come apart rather spectacularly, sucked valves, broke cranks, spit the sleeve seals, fun stuff like that.

I am taking a chance with this one as it's in a low use application (RV) with an Allison behind (or in front as it were) it and likely hasn't had the abuse that a commercial application medium truck would have had.

Been a long time tucking company operator and mechanic who should probably know better, wish me luck!

Do a Cummins 555 search on Bing Web and you will get a lot of info. I even saw an ad for four brand new engines. Have fun with your FT.
