Now that the new carpet is down...

We purchased a home once where the previous owners dog had frequently and liberally relieved himself in a couple different locations within the living room. After pulling up the carpet and pad we treated the floor with some kind of paint on barrier recommend by friends that owned a paint store. Wish I could remember what it was. It was very potent, came with all kinds of warnings about ventilation.

If the underlayment is urine soaked and left untreated you'll never get rid of the smell.

Here is a link to the air Refresher.

Iíll 2nd the ideas of using an adsorbent (charcoal?) and ozone (I used to work in the air pollution business).
But you need to first be certain of the real source and remove it. Then realize that all synthetic materials will absorb and hold odor (think about getting your clothes near a smoky fire - they even smell of smoke after washing).

Its best to wash all interior services with a cleaner that breaks down the odors as opposed to masking the odor. Baking soda is a great cleaner. Most alcohol based cleaners do a good job of breaking down odors. Anything you can wash, wash. All else, either throw away or wipe it down with a cleaner.

For those areas you canít reach like A/C ducts, find a non-masking type of air freshener. Many of the commercial air cleaning companies use such an air freshener in their air cleaners to freshen the air by breaking down the odor molecule (not masking it).

And finally, an adsorbent of some type placed in the vehicle. Charcoal is prob not the best for this type of odor. Potassium permanganate would probably be better.

Just my 2 cents worth. YMMV.

We used Kilz in our house that had the same problem. Worked fantastically.

I do have interior pics and it is mint and as originally built in the 70s. Sorry but Iím going to hold off posting them because I am in the middle of writing a magazine article about its history starting from the original owner from the factory in 1952.
