Currently we have a 78 (or 79, there has been much debate! lol) Dodge Brougham that we've named Clementine. I've had it for a little over 4 years and am in the process of possibly getting a class A.

But heres Clementine:

Bypassing the letters (so only counting numbers) it is an 8

VIN year digits/numbers are counted from right to left. You can not read the VIN like a book from left to right because the year can be in different positions due to different lengths of VIN's. Up until 1979 the VIN year would be numeric i.e. 9 could be '69 or '79. In 1980 the VIN year started with A for '80, B for '81 and so on.

The year is the eighth digit/letter from the right.

From right to left the 8th digit / letter is 7. This is fun... eventually you will have my full VIN!

The chassis is a 1977 model year.

The motorhome still could be registered as a '78 or '79 for DMV purposes, depending on when the coach was registered by the builder. Your registration and/or title should show the year model of the coach.

Jim and 87Rockwood, your way works too. This is the way I learned when I was a service adviser for Chrysler in the early eighties. The different VIN lengths were somewhat confusing during the changeover from '79 to'80

Yea, my Fleetwood Class A is registerd as a 1990 Limited Edition, but it was manufactured in 1989. Actually rolled off the assembly line in November of 1989.
Weird, but that's the way it is.
