That's a beautiful Imperial, except for the bottom flag. I've had three of them, an '84, an '87 and an'89. Loved them all.
What year is yours?

Our vintage camper
Here's our 1975 VW camper at Fall Creek Falls (top) and Caesar Creek State Park (bottom) earlier this year. It may be slow (and old) but nothing new compares

I have always liked the Westies, have you seen these guys?
http://subagon.com/
I would really like one of these, synchros with a Subaru engine, it would be a perfect outback/wilderness rig.

I've never personally seen the syncro version, but I have seen a 2wd Subaru powered bus at various shows - they are really something. You should see them on the road - zoom!
That said, the conversion process is a bit more work than I'm interested in. I figure if ever go that route I think that I'd get another Sportsmobile - that way someone else can do all the hard stuff and I can enjoy their efforts I had one of the original VW Sportsmobiles a long time ago and it was a good camper, but the one's they make now are seriously nice, especially for backwoods camping like you are talking about.
