I have been scared out of my mind to tackle the job of pulling the driver's side outer skin off and redoing the luan.. My 88 Elandan 34RQ only has 35,000 miles.. It;s only the driver's side that had some leaks because previous owner didn't take care of the caulking. outside of that and a minor exhaust manifold leak, this thing HAD zero problems. I never winterized it last winter cause i had like 4 heaters running inside.. well, was not enough to stop my hot water tank from freezing and splitting.. also toilet valve split, and the kitchen sink faucet cap broke. I have also started converting the rear bedroom into an office sort of. found some plywood that i will have to repair as well as more inner wall luan that has to get replaced.
I;ve owned this rig for 3 years. sadly, i have only camped in it twice. but as of 2 months ago, I am full timing in it due to pending divorce. (it's ok.. GOOOOD THING.. )
Started removing the old stripes... was going to do something cool, but the fiberglass fading has made it so im stuck reusing the old stripe locations.. thinking of going with a WIDE stripe but all done up in the middle with one of those 70's van type designs.. some pin striping around the edges of the stripe, etc..
I will post current interior pics soon. It's not the same as it was when i bought it. PS: an RV company installed the awning as an aftermarket unit.. they used 1/2" self tapping screws for the upper strip which was worthless as the side is fiberglass and FOAM.... same with the lower leg mounting bolts.. 1" bolts going thru nothing but fiberglass layer and FOAM board.. somehow, the awning managed to stay stuck to the RV for 4 years.. must not have been extended much cause i had it extended for 2 days and found it completely ripped off the RV and laying on the ground. I redid the whole thing.. with 1.5" upper screws going all the way to the aluminum structute and thru the wall carriage bolts and 1/4" thick metal mount plates for the legs.. Left the awning up one day when we got a freak rain storm.. there was close to 100 gallons of water on top of my awning and it stayed put!! I could not even push the awning up to get the water off.. had to syphon it with a hose.. lol..

Best of everything to you in refurbing the RV. It is amazing what dealerships will do, considering they're suppose to be 'experts'. Hope the roads get smoother for you.

Great looking work. Certainly made it a lot more liveable I'm sure. Looks like you've got a knack for woodwork and more.

Yes, we have done all the work ourselves. We are currently about 11 months into this now. It is hard to see all the things that we have done, but here's a short list of what we've done. Replaced the carpet with pergo, replaced the driver's compartment carpet with a new more neutral color carpet, refinished all the cabinet doors, removed all the wall paper from the ceiling and installed vinyl, replaced all the ceiling lighting, made and installed new cabinets in the bedroom to add some storage, replaced all the counter tops and bathroom flooring with granite tile, removed and replaced all the wall paper on the walls, replaced all the sinks and toilet with new, removed all the plastic drawers from the kitchen and made new oak drawers, removed all the valences and made new ones out of crown molding, replaced all the curtains with mini blinds, made new curtains for the drivers area, replaced all the furniture with new furniture. I guess a list of what we haven't done would have been shorter, haha. We are on the tail end of the project, but I have a few cabinet drawers to still make, we will be replacing the cabinet door inserts with black tempered glass. My current project is fabricating a drop down tv mount that will lower down from the dining area cabinet and retract out of sight when not in use. As for a price on our renovation at some point it is better to stop adding up the receipts as it gets depressing. I will repeat a statement that I read somewhere else on the forum, "by doing the renovation I saved about $100,000, because I didn't have to buy a new motorhome." As my wife puts it, "now it is exactly the way we want it."
P.S. If you would like some accurate figures on price feel free to email me chrisreed09@gmail.com

Looks like we own the same motorhome as you. We were curious if you had redone the decals on the exterior and would like to see some interior photos if you have any.

If you decide to tackle some interior renovations and have any questions please feel free to ask. I am nowhere near an expert, but have developed some skills in this area over the last 11 months on ours. Always happy to help. I'm curious what gas engine/ trans combo you had previously and what diesel engine/trans combo you went with. How did it help your mileage?

Nice work. How did you get the old stripes off? Mine has bad stripes which a previous owner covered with another stripe. It looks pretty bad. I would like to get those stripes off and paint some on.

We have posted these pictures before (my apologies) but this is how we dealt with the "old stripes" issue on our '89 Fleetwood Southwind.
We repainted with Interlux Brightside marine paint and pinstriping detail, and purchased custom silver logos from an ebay seller.

I'll throw this out in case some of new RV's haven't thought about it or maybe help someone else who isn't aware of this trick.
When leaving the awning out for extended periods of time, especially if your camping and are headed into town or out for a hike and it's cloudy outside, and might rain. Lower one side of the awning leg and leave it drooping down crooked to channel the rain off the awning onto the ground. The weight of 100 gallons of water is over 834 lbs. And that's a asking a lot from a fabric. 8.34+ lbs per gallon.
I usually just drop the rear prop down all the way when I leave my campsight for a time. This way the front is still in it's normal heigth and I don't hit my head on the awning if I return home after sundown.

1988 Xplorer
Here is our home. a 1988 33 foot Diesel Pusher. we have tried to start an xplorers club and currently have found one other person. lol these were custom built by Franks in Michigan. and joined later by Chrysler. we are lucky enough to have all the paperwork and blueprints for it. we average 10 MPG with a thousand mile range. it has a 5.9 cummins turbo diesel, that has 61,000 miles on it and runs like new.
We lost the Mazda in California. long story...... and currently tow a 1986 Suzuki Samauri, a classic in itself, being the first year they were introduced to America.
and we continue to improve the looks both inside and out. we love our home and the open road.

Here's a link for ya that will give you a little insight as to how I remove a bunch of decals from our previous RV. If you've got any questions just give me a yell! Our RV Travels: Decals - going, going, gone

Saying I'm impressed is an understatement! A lot of hard work has went into that and congrats on keeping to it. You're a better man than me.

What did you use to remove the old stripes?
