Could you add the manufacturer of the steps to your post and the year and model of your coach.
Do you have the steps users manual , with wiring diagrams?

I'm curious, are there other makers of power steps for Rv's besides Kwikee?

Yes there were a couple " back in the day " , Coach Step comes to mind, although , Lippert seems to be intent on buying up any competition, going to Power Gear site ( Kwikee ) or Coach Step , leads you to the Lippert site.

Switch or power?

Sounds like the "step" switch is turned off.

Most have a switch just inside the door to control step operation so you turn off while parked so step stays out when you close the door.

Turn ign key on and the step is live.

Sounds like what you are reporting.

Possible switch or power to it.
