Refrigeration question

My wife and I are new to the RV experience, we just purchased a 1988 Fleetwood Jamboree on a Ford E350, with 460CId, 7.5 liter. My question is regarding the refrigerator unit. In the past we rented an RV, and we were told that it usually take a day or so for the refrigerator to become cold prior to the trip. is this correct even if we plug into the house outlet, or is that the generator?

We keep a couple 2 liter pop bottles filled with water in the freezer at our house. I throw one in the freezer and one in the fridge in the motorhome when we are getting ready for a trip. Kind of jump starts the cooling process.

We do the same thing only with gallon milk jugs. It will cut the cool down time from 12 hours to about 4.
