Saving a Champion

being a new comer to rv restoration, i am a car enthusiast who just saved a 1977 dodge champion from sitting and rotting to death. in my opinion the unit has a lot of promise. it is very dirty, has been sitting for years, needs a lot of mechanical attention, all which i think i should be able to handle. however, the interior ceiling is droopy, water stained and i think it needs a total replacement. the roof has leaks in several places but the camper now sits in a giant tent, so it will be able to dry out. i do not know the extent of the damage if any and am not afraid to take on a big project. i was thinking of "liquid roof" as a first step but was wondering if there is a standard procedure for conquering interior and exterior roofs in a quality manner. i believe in doing it once and doing it right. i have no idea what i will encounter if i pull down the ceiling. does anyone have any thoughts. thanks

Good luck on the rebuild, why not post some pics for us before you start and then of the progression.

Your roof is a sandwich of materials, luwann board inside, framing with insulation in between, then thin sheet of plywood and then either an aluminum roof or some other material.

A unit that old, the major problem with the house part is rot in the ceiling, walls and floor. You really can't tell how far the damage is until you start opening it up. Do you know if it is wood framed, steel or aluminum? In either case you can replace framing with wood if it is easier for you to work with.

Look at some of the other rebuilds in the Vintage section.

Could be steel frame

We had a titan/champion 1974 on dodge chassis, it had all steel frame, the box was built very well, rest not so much.

It was a very ugly green, but it was only $250.00, it now is being remodeled as a medical wagon at a local old air base.

Strip the insides out to the steel and start fresh.

Also get a map to write down the locations of gas stations...if that is dodge with 440 there are very few cgas stations it can pass by without stopping, but it really scoots...
