Sealing Vertical Lap Seams
Just bought a 73 Holiday Vacationer/22' so I'm a noob with lots to learn.
First concern is making sure everything is water tight. (That and replacing the water heater.) I was told by the seller that there were no leaks. But the TT was out in the California high desert, so I don't know how accurate that is. Though the roof was recently painted (by the seller), I can see where it has peeled exposing aluminum. I'm sure I'll get to that, but...
When I look at the vertical seams on sides, it looks like there's no sealant there to keep water out. There are hex head sheet metal screws at the seams, but no visible bead.
Before I do anything, I wanted to see if anyone knows how these were generally assembled. Are these seams mechanically joined / folded together? (which would mean I don't really need to do anything?) Or are these simply overlapping? Is there a bead there and I just can't see it? If I remove the screws, will I have any issue separating the two sheets of aluminum?
Assuming the worst (no sealant, no mechanical joint), I'm thinking that if I separate the two edges and clean well, I can insert Eterna Bond double sticky tape and then screw it back down. Then I won't ever have to wonder/worry about it again.
I'm a pretty good DIY'er, so on the face of it this doesn't seem like a difficult job. Just don't want to start the job and end up turning a non-issue into a huge problem.
