Shocks on 77 Chev G30 chassis "C" Class Motorhome

Hi all,

Does your older Chev chassis C Class have front shocks? For whatever reason mine doesn't and there is no indication (holes mounts etc) that there ever was any and I find this strange.

Anything definitive out there?

Really? no front shock absorbers at all? What does the thing drive like?

Our first RV was a new 1976 Midas Mini 23 ft. on a GM chopped van chassis (Class C). My memory is that, to reduce the weight on the front suspension, it had a long rear overhang to cantilever more weight on the back axle with dual tires. When the original shocks wore out at around 10,000 miles, the thing bounded and porpoised all over the road; kinda pivoting at the back axle. I was in the back bathroom once, while my wife drove, and bolted out - in anticipation of her loosing control (the bounding and instability was that bad). I bought Monroe Magnum shocks, but these wore out even faster. I finally settled on Tokiko gas shocks, and these lasted until we sold the MH at 97,000 miles.

Unless your unit has been in some strange wreck, or modified by some nut case, there must be front shock mounts somewhere. My memory is kinda dim for our '76 Midas, but check for a threaded stud welded on the rear of the front a-arm, and maybe a threaded hole about 12 - 15 inches above this. The upper mount may be a bolt that has been removed, and maybe the lower mount might be a bolt also. Sometimes shocks for a specific application will have bolts or adapters included, and you might get a parts store to open a shock absorber package for your examination.

Actually I have no trouble driving the old girl as is. I am going to go check it again but I did have a Chev 1 ton truck and it had shocks up the middle of the coil springs in the "A" frame section.

Boy it looks like this old Possum needs a nap. From the front vantage point laying on the ground looking up at the coil spring there is no shock evident. Looking from behind the front tires up toward the engine, there's a big old shock bolted top and bottom to the sides of the "A" frame. Panic averted.
