Stalling with E350 460engine- 1990 Flair
Hi. We got a 1990 Fleetwood Flair. After getting from Iowa to Florida, the engine stalled. quit dead at highway speed. kinda sputtered, slowed then stopped. about 3 hours later, i Tried it and it started right up, and went 40 miles and same thing. took it to Repair shop. by the time we got to Ruskin, we had been stalled by the highway 3 times, in the shops 3 weeks...
here is is what got "fixed"... tank fuel pump...fuel pump on rail... Fuel filter...Muffler..ignition modual..distributor...points,,,fuel regulator...
Any ideas? we'd like to camp, but theywon't let us camp at the repair shop

Engine coolant temperature sensor can cause similar problem but that is still throwing parts at it on a guess.
I'm guessing they weren't able to pull any codes from the computer?

If all of this work is being done in one shop, it's time to find another.
Points ? Not in a 1990 engine.

2 Different Shops...Gibsonton Florida---muffler, distributor cap, distributor rotor,ignition control module,coil,distributor pick-up,1 in tank fuel pump, 1 fuel filter....$1,000
Tallahassee--1 fuel pumps, fuel filter.... i think that all i can see, so no points,,.$1,200 ($820 labor)

Is it running hot? You said muffler but have you checked the converter in front of the muffler? Mine started losing power and quit. I could let it cool off and it would crank up and run fine until the temperature got up high again. It wound up being a stopped up converter. The exhaust just couldn't get out.

My converter had the honeycomb material all broken up and it had clogged up the exhaust just before it went into the muffler.

You know, this mechanic told me the converter had been messed with in the past, and he did change the muffler... wonder if there is debris between the muffler and the converter... good idea. thanks

It is the fuel pump
I absolutely guarantee that it is the fuel pump. The most common engine problem with that vintage ford 350 was the fuel pump. On a trip to Phoenix Az to Sacramento Ca my sisters rig did that exact sane as you described. Changed the fuel pump and no more problems. Not a cheap pump though...
I see you already changed the fuel pump...new pump is bad also. Three more cents makes a nickel ...

Sounds like it's past time to find a shop that's able to do some diagnostic testing. Fuel pressure/exhaust pressures etc you've already spent a fortune in guess work with no good results. It may be something really simple. You need to find a good truck shop that can diagnose and show a reason to replace parts.

We used a Freightliner truck shop the first time, and that didnt work out so good. They charged me for several hundreds of dollars in diagnostic time. ... adamfolger, which fuel pump did they change?

Does it seem to run ok with a full tank of fuel? Have you left your gas cap open a bit in case the fuel tank is not venting and sucking a vacuum? Does it lose power and then die or just die suddenly?

gas level doesnt matter. Will try leaving gas cap loose...it goes 55 down the road, then suddenly i notice as a push the gas pedal, it doesnt respond, and continues to slow down. gas pedalpressure makes no difference. it continues to loose power until it stops running. will restart after several hours, but will do it all again 50-80 miles later.
